Practice Karate At Home

You do not need a hall, or large area to practice Karate. I have recorded a few videos which will hopefully help you practice at home in a smaller area.

Make sure when practicing at home, there are no people/objects too close to you, and if you are a child you must be supervised by an adult. When practicing weapons, I recommend that it is done in the garden, or an outdoor safe area, and extra special care is taken.

Please excuse the quality of the videos, I filmed them outside the garages next to my house due to social distancing…

Why Practice Karate At Home?

Warm Up & Stretching

Before starting. you should do a warm up.

This gets the blood flowing through the body faster, raising your heart rate and loosens your muscles up. It is also good exercise to help keep fit.

You must also stretch your muscles. This prevents injury and makes you more flexible.

Basics

Basics (Kihon) are very important to improve technique, speed, power and more.

Do not only practice these basics for the duration of the video, you should pause the video and practice for longer on your own.

Kata

Kata translates to “form” referring to a detailed choreographed pattern of movements made to be practised alone. It is practised in as a way to memorise and perfect the movements being executed.

Kumite

Kumite is sparring. Usually it is done with a partner but as we are currently social distancing, here are some techniques you can practice alone.

Combination Techniques

Renraku Waza is when you put more one technique together in basics. For each grade there are different combinations, getting progressively harder.

Weapons Katas

Using weapons is very dangerous so you must be extremely careful, and make sure no one is too close to you. I recommend that you practice weaponry in your garden, or a safe outdoor area. Before using any weapons, make sure you have inspected it to ensure it is not damaged, and will not break.
